This is an update from Randy’s niece Suzanne Hill who lives in Leland, NC near Wilmington:
“Everyone here is ok! But lots of prayer and physical help needed in the western part of North Carolina. It is truly catastrophically horrible. Never seen anything this bad. We were planning a fall leaf trip up around Chimney Rock in two weeks as the mountains are beautiful this time of year. Chimney Rock is gone; it’s floating in nearby Lake Lure.
Asheville is at least half gone. Biltmore estates around the mansion is devastated. 1-40 is closed through the mountains.
Only small stretches of it aren’t washed away. So many tiny towns up there are inaccessible with no food, clean water, phones or internet. Missing people and no way to find out about them for a good long while. I heard via social media from my friend who recently lost her husband that she’s ok but can’t get into town to access the Internet every day.
Sheriff’s offices are gathering food and water and other essentials close to Asheville for distribution when possible as are several local churches. This will take a very long time to get things moving again. But Sarah is good in Raleigh and we are all good on the coast. Road problems were rough here for a bit because of the rains we got a couple of weeks ago and then all Helene’s rain, but nothing like western North Carolina.
Some people are hiking up through the wreckage to try and find family members but it’s too bad for most people to even try and it’s not encouraged for obvious reasons. I tried to gather some things that are needed there and take them to a local church that has access to a big truck and a plane.”
